CALL FOR PAPERS
Studia Philosophia proposes an international debate on the phenomenon of art, technology and scientific development in the present digital era, focusing on the impact of the digital media in our lives.

Today’s digital technologies have created a new model of understanding different aspects of reality. The change they produced compels us to reconsider the conditioning of our modern lives while their potential demands to be explored. Penetrating and transforming everyday cultural practices and spaces, they are defining our present paradigm. Communication technologies and portable media devices are today omnipresent and are increasingly ubiquitous and personalized.

By capturing and transforming the analog signal in digital form, we are today capable to deal with information of all kinds brought to a common denominator. The digitalization allows us to treat and to carry different types of data with the same efficiency, but also to intermingle them. After a period when the attention was focused on the structures of digital, today we are facing a much more general concern related to the possibilities offered by the interposition between analogue and digital data. With the digitalization we assist to a phenomenon of automation which penetrates the very aspects of our lives. Their alliance today with the spectrum of nano- and bio-technologies is about to induce majors changes in the way we deals with matter and identity.

If the matematization defined modernity, we also notice today a re-evaluation of phenomenological aspects. What kind of models are we using today in perceiving and understanding our environment? In which way these models are to be found in the technological development? Can the phenomenological approach and description bring light to the study of digital structures? What are the means phenomenology provides for the study of the digital technologies and their implications? Which are the potential and the limits of the phenomenological method in the field? Are there new models that impose themselves in the analysis of our highly technological world?

By trying to answer all these questions, we intend to identify the relevance of the phenomenological approach and method in the research of digital technologies. Our goal in this special issue is to bring together papers that explore the different ways in which philosophy, aesthetics, cognitive science and computer sciences can be combined to offer a novel perspective on digital technologies. Prospective authors are encouraged to take into account the following areas:

1. Digital Technology and Common Experience:
* digital and new media art
* imaging and sound technology
* digital-being
* virtual and mixed realities
* augmented reality and augmented virtuality
* digital fiction and digital reality
* simulation and interactivity
* techno- and telepresence
* portable technology and technosomatics
* phenomenological exploration of the digital

2. The Process of Digitalization:
* data systems and models
* data structures and databases
* digitalization and digital literacy
* digital phenomenon
* techniques of representation and visualization
* digitalization and codification of experience
* codification and automation
* codification and materialization
* soft computation
* philosophy of science and phenomenotechnique

The papers and reviews will be selected from the submitted proposals on the basis of double blind peer reviews. Authors should address the papers before September 1st, 2010 and will be notified on the results via email by October 22, 2010.

The sixth edition of make art – in-between design: rediscovering
collaboration in digital art – will take place in Poitiers (FR), from
the 4th to the 7th of November 2010.

make art is an international festival dedicated to the integration
of Free/Libre/Open Source Software (FLOSS) in digital art.
make art offers performances, presentations, workshops and an
exhibition, focusing on the encounter between digital art and free
software.

*in-between design: rediscovering collaboration in digital art*

Today’s market production accelerates the spread of non-critical and
standardized aesthetics, by means of locked top-down distribution
mechanisms and a series of tools that enforce it. At the same time
new forms of methodologies inspired or powered by free software,
participatory practices and peer-to-peer networks are fueling many
Internet subcultures. Some of these emerging practices will lead to
competitive social productions, while other will remain as pure
artistic experiments.

By adopting production and distribution methods based on free software
and open standards and by sharing the sources of one’s work with
others, the collective knowledge base and aesthetic sensibilities can
freely interact to explore uncharted, hybrid directions which no
longer reflect the supremacy of a single idea.

- Does the sharing of artworks “recipes” and tools help debunk
the myth of the isolated design genius?
- By leaving the possibility of ongoing development and refinement,
is it possible to ever produce a “final” design?
- Can these methods and technologies inspire new forms of creation or
tools, beyond self-referential productions?
- Is it wishful thinking to approach collaborative graphical design
in the same way as an open source software project?
- Is Free and Open Source licensing a catalyst for creation or does
it add an extra level of complexity?
- Can the limitation of one license trigger new forms of constrained
creativity?

We’re currently seeking new, innovative media art and design works and
projects focusing on the above theme and questions:
- graphical artworks and installations
- lectures
- project presentations
- software and hardware demos

We’re also seeking audiovisual performances that will take place
during the festival evenings.

The submitted projects must fit this focus and be made in a free/libre
and open source environment, this includes both its optional
dependencies or production tools and the operating system. We are
asking you to publish the sources of your project under a free culture
license of your choice or release it into the public domain.
Projects that do not meet these criteria will not be considered.

*How to apply*

Submission form and a list of additional requirements are available at:
http://makeart.goto10.org/call/

Deadline: *Saturday 31 July 2010*

Incomplete or late applications will not be processed.

*Timeline*

31st of July 2010 – Deadline call for proposals
Beginning of September – Selected projects notifications
4th-7th of November 10  – make art 2010 – Poitiers (FR)

composers. The centerpiece of ((audience)) is a biennial program of 5.1
surround sound works by international artists intended for presentation
in movie theaters as “cinema in the dark.” This program travels to
partnering organizations from Delhi, India to New York City —
accompanied by curatorial lectures, performances, exhibitions and
screenings on a city-by-city basis.

CALL FOR WORKS
((audience)) is issuing a special call for 5.1 surround sound works for
the 2011 Unsound festival. Selected works will be presented in a
completely dark cinema environment without visual accompaniment at the
Walter Reade Theater / Film Society of Lincoln Center. Selected artists
will receive a modest fee. (Fees to be determined in September.)

All works must relate to this year’s festival theme: “Horror – the
Pleasure of Fear and Unease” (for example, one could submit a soundtrack
to an imagined horror film; a radio play; a work dealing abstractly with
the concept of horror, etc.) New works or newly contextualized works
will be accepted. Artists currently located in Eastern Europe are
encouraged to apply, and will receive special attention. We are
especially interested in narrative or musical works that play with the
traditional idea of cinematic surround sound, and/or with the concept of
horror, and in works that emphasize temporal, narrative or spatial
experimentation.

PLEASE download the submission instructions for information on how to
submit, by visiting http://au.dience.org/?/submit/submit/

Deadline: Sunday 15th, August, 2010
