Pixxelpoint is one of the most successful and renowned festivals of new media art in Slovenia and also abroad. Its purpose is firstly, to bring the information technology and new media art closer to the general public, and secondly, to raise awareness about a different potential to use computer among the young. This year’s theme: Triple Conjunction: Magic, Myths and Mutations. How do artists reflect the year 2010? It is the beginning year of predictions of the end of the world, catastrophes and natural destructions. With anxiety, humor or indifference? Ecological, social and economical positions are influencing our daily reconsideration of ourselves, our environment and political changes. Artistic reflections in media art are often inspirations for an other view on our planet and our lives. Submissions are invited for the categories new media installation, computer based art and work in traditional media.

Poole Literary Festival is delighted to announce their partnership with The Media School at Bournemouth University to establish a Prize for New Media Writing. The prize will allow writers working with New Media to showcase their skills, provoke discussion and raise awareness of new media writing and the future of the written word. The competition is now open for entries. The deadline for entries to reach us is Midday, 15th September 2010. Click here for information on how to enter and here to see who is on the judging panel.
Michael Bhaskar, a member of the judging panel, said: “This award is breaking genuinely new ground in looking at how digital technology is transforming written communication. As the first award of its kind globally it will be a landmark in the increasingly exciting arena of new media writing and I am thrilled to be involved.”
http://www.poolelitfest.com/new-media-prize.php

What it is:
Storytelling, whether fiction or non-fiction, written specifically for delivery and reading/viewing on a PC or Mac, on the web, or via mobile phone.
Could be thought of as a short story, a novel, a documentary, or poetry.
However, ‘writing’ and ‘literature’ in the digital age now can include words, images, film, animation, and interactivity for the audience.
New media writing can be created using any equipment you wish, from a word processor, to a DV camera; you can shoot photos on your mobile phone, or scan objects on you desktop scanner – anything goes, as long as you have an engaging story to tell (or poetry to express).
You can tell your story by combining any number of media elements, e.g. words on a screen combined with images and video clips.

What it isn’t:
A story/poem written for print which you upload to a webpage or place on a CDROM.
Simply screens of words uploaded to your blog.
Simply a slide show of photos uploaded to Flickr.
Simply a video uploaded to YouTube.

What do we mean by ‘interactivity for the audience’?

Typically new media writing exploits the potential of the web, and so offers the reader/viewer of the narrative a range of ‘activity’ beyond simply reading text or watching film.
For example, a viewer might need to click the mouse on a word or image on screen to activate the next sequence of text, or to link them to the next ‘chapter’.
In some cases, interactivity might involve the reader/viewer in making choices about how the story progresses (remember those ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ books).
There might be game-like elements, e.g. answer a question before the next episode or chapter is activated.
There might be a choice of themes for the reader/viewer to explore, rather than follow the conventional chapter 1,2.3,4 pattern.
Some new media narratives allow readers/viewers to follow characters, again rather than the usual chapter structure.
It’s up to you to use new media inventively to build your narrative; and it’s up to you to include interactivity engagingly for the reader/viewer.

What do we want when you enter the New Media Writing Competition?
Your work must be a complete story, i.e. have a discernible beginning middle and end; or be a complete poem or collection of poems, i.e have a title/s and clearly defined textual and visual boundaries.
It must be clearly your own work. If we can’t work out where your piece ends and someone else’s work begins we may have to disqualify your entry..
It must use interactive elements for the reader/viewer, and these must be effective in telling your story or expressing your poetic ideas.
Make sure you supply us with an active link (URL) to your story or poem – your work must be online for us to be able to read/view it.
Make sure you are not breaking anyone’s copyright if you have sourced material from anywhere other than your imagination, e.g. an image downloaded form Google. If we suspect copyright has been infringed we may have to disqualify your entry.
Our judging criteria:
Innovative use of new media to create an engaging, satisfying narrative, or poetry
Ease of accessibility for the reader/viewer
Effective use of interactive elements
Show us that new media can do things ‘old’ media can’t!

http://www.poolelitfest.com/new-media-prize.php

Deadline: Wednesday 15th, September, 2010

A NEW AWARD FROM THE UDK BERLIN !
UdK Award for Interdisciplinary Art and Science

The UdK Berlin is one of the biggest, most traditional institutions of advanced artistic education in the world. It has the right to award doctorates and post-doctoral lecturing qualifications and offers more than 40 study courses covering the full spectrum of the arts and related academic fields. With its Colleges of Fine Art, Design, Music and Performing Arts and the Central Institute of Continuing Education it is one of the few centres of advanced art education in Germany with university status.

The Competition:

Art and science are moving towards one another, discovering common issues and working methods. The creative, imaginative processes in the arts and sciences are similar, whereas the concrete realisation of their results tends to differ. Repeatedly, this difference is the source of productive tension and areas of friction. In all disciplines of the arts and sciences, further developments over recent decades have been characterised by mutual influences and efforts at differentiation. Today, traditional dividing lines between the spheres can no longer be maintained; they are being newly defined and presented in their permeability. This competition aims to give the impetus and opportunity to artists (fine art, media, architecture, design, music, theatre, visual communication etc.) and scientists to work between the priorities of the arts or between the arts and science.

Participants:

Individuals and groups are eligible to participate. Full-time employees of the UdK Berlin, as well as students of the UdK Berlin and other colleges/universities are excluded.

Prize:

The prize will be awarded on a biennial basis and is endowed with 7,500 Euros.

Jury:

The jury under the chairmanship of the President of the UdK Berlin consists of the Chair of the Commission for Artistic and Scientific Projects at the UdK Berlin, the Director of the Postgraduate School of the UdK Berlin and four additional jurors who do not belong to the UdK Berlin in any way and have shown outstanding achievements in their own professional fields.

Special Issue on ‘Mobile Digital Interactive Storytelling’

Until recently a location’s memory could mainly be accessed through media surrogates, such as books, drawings, film or audio files, or through face?to?face encounters with people who were able to knit people into the rich but hidden experience fabric of a place. The integration of low cost pervasive and personal technology in the form of mobile devices and augmented reality into our everyday life starts to change our expectations about how to perceive the world around us.

We are now able to leave traces of our emotional or intellectual experience as virtual attachments to any location. As a result we expect that any place, indoors or outdoors, reveals itself to us by confronting us with connection, context, and uncommon perspectives. Yet, any exploration is in itself an experience and so we desire that the revelation is compelling and enjoyable on an individual and group level. We expect to experience the world around us as a continuous, flexible, and networked exchange of ideas that are routed in where and who we are and how these intrinsic facets of our experience are connected to those of others.

For this special issue we solicit novel papers describing approaches in digital storytelling that address the challenges posed by real world environments experienced through mobile devices. We look for work solutions for redefining our understanding of narrative structure and theory through interactivity in computer?generated story worlds that are tightly interwoven with the places we visit, the objects we touch, and the people we meet. Emphasis will be given to work that seamlessly integrate computerised story telling with real world experiences, including but not limited to:
• Real?time techniques for interactive storytelling
• Story generation and plot management engines for mobile environments
• Interactive digital storytelling: theories, methods, and concepts applied to real world environments
• Emotion design for storytelling
• Educational digital storytelling
• Experience design for interactive storytelling
• Mobile urban drama
• Novel narrative forms inspired by new technology
• Storytelling and augmented reality
• Collaborative environments for interactive storytelling
• Interactive storytelling and gaming
• Interactive and pro?active authoring environments
• Evaluation and user experience reports of interactive storytelling applications
