In 2011 AND worked in partnership with the British Waterways and The Waterways Trust to pilot an artists residency programme on the Canals of the Northwest of England. Due to its success we will be offering another unique opportunity for an artist to be in residence on a canal boat on and around the Manchester and Pennine waterways in summer 2012.

The aim of the programme is to offer artists (minimum of two participants) a dedicated period of time to develop research or a project in this unique habitat that questions what it is to be resident on the waterways. AND are seeking applications from individuals / groups working in emerging artistic practice that questions normality. Applicants should have an established background in their respective fields and should be able to demonstrate how a residency period at AND will assist the development of their research and practice.

RESIDENCY DETAILS

This residency will be based on a Canal Boat on the Manchester and Pennine Waterways, Northwest England for approximately four weeks in August and September 2012. Accommodation will be provided on a canal boat for four weeks, full training on boat handling and maintenance will be provided at the beginning of the residency. A route will be mapped out in collaboration with the resident artists and partner organisations.

The handling of a canal boat requires two people, therefore the residency is open to a minimum of two people. There may be a possibility to provide accommodation for more participants, so the residency encourages applications from collaborating artists, collectives and families (fees and stipend remain the same).

The following budget is available to the resident artist (to be managed by AND):
•	An artists’ fee and stipend of £1500 GBP (to include any materials and/or production and living costs)
•	Travel expenses to the UK of up to £1000 GBP

HOW TO APPLY

Apply by sending a statement (no longer than two sides of A4) detailing:
•	Your particular areas of interest in relation to the programme and its goals
•	A suggestion of how you would spend your time in residence, what outcomes you would expect to achieve and why
Please also include in your application:
•	Your CV
•	Examples of previous work
•	A completed equal opportunities monitoring form (available to download from the AND website www.andfestival.org.uk.
Applications should be submitted by email to residency@andfestival.org.uk

Deadline for Applications: 17:00 Fri 25 May 2012
Interviews will be held the w/c 11 June at Cornerhouse, Manchester or via skype.
For an informal discussion prior to submitting an application contact Ruth McCullough, AND Festival Producer residency@andfestival.org.uk

AND is working in partnership with Rogue Artist Studio Project Space to pilot an new artists’ residency programme in collaboration with the artist Heath Bunting in connection to his ongoing research as part of the Status Project.

In 2005, Bunting embarked on the Status Project, which consists of data drawn from everyday bureaucracies, for example the use of a television licence, rail card or mobile phone contract through governmental databases and the Internet. These are then linked to each other according to their dependencies and overlaps. The research is based on the concept that “our identity is constructed as human beings that can possess one or more natural persons. The higher up in the class system the better the access to status variety.” Through this research Bunting has developed a method of navigating social and civic systems in order to create new identities legally. http://status.irational.org

The residency will offer the selected particiant(s) a new, off-the-shelf identity and use of the Rogue Artist Studio Project Space from 18 July – 2 September 2012. Alongside these resources there will also be an opportunity to be mentored by Heath Bunting during the residency, in order to develop new work or areas of research.

RESIDENCY DETAILS
The full details of the residency will be worked out in collaboration with the selected participants(s) and their proposed project or research focus.
The residency can offer the following resources:
●	The basic elements of a new ready-made identity
●	Use of Project Space at Rogue Artists’ Studios 18 July – 2 September 2012
●	Mentoring support in project development from AND, Rogue Project Space, Heath Bunting and the Information Systems Department, Salford University Business School
●	Access to partner networks, publicity and legal support
The following budget is available to the resident artist (to be managed by AND):
●	An artists’ fee and stipend of £1500 GBP (to include any materials and/or production and living costs)
●	Accomodation and travel expenses to the UK of up to £1000 GBP
If necessary, accommodation can be provided locally and will be discussed at the interview stage.

Residency

Since 2009 the artist collective Medea Electronique has organized an annual 10-day experimental artist residency, Koumaria, near Sparta in Greece, focusing on improvisation and new media practices. Avant-garde artists from all over the world, inspired by the Greek natural landscape, come together to create a multicultural and cross-media ‘dialogue’ culminating in a collective presentation in Athens at the end of the residency. Past residents have formed lasting friendships and new artistic partnerships. For us the residency serves as a model for future creative collaborations.

The residency is held at an organic olive oil farm at the foot of Mount Taigetos in Sparta. The base for the residency, a modern and comfortable house, features dormitory-style bedrooms, large and comfortable common rooms (featuring fireplaces and magnificent views of the surrounding mountains and fields), two primary spaces for project development and practice, terraces, rooftop overlooks, and a large and modern kitchen. (A second building is being constructed which may be ready for this year’s residency.) The surrounding hills, mountains, villages and the not too distant sea, coupled with a vast expanse of sky, stars, and ever-changing mountain vistas, afford the residents amble space and opportunity for creative work. Meals are taken communally, with an emphasis on fresh and local produce and traditional recipes. In this environment artists not only have the chance to live and work together interacting with the Greek landscape, but also to trade their experiences concerning everyday life and culture. Chores are undertaken collectively, but there is ample time for residents to work, create, explore the surroundings and enter into new artistic partnerships.

The residency is held in cooperation with the Onassis Cultural Centre (http://www.sgt.gr/en), who will host the performance of the residency results as part of a major international 3 day event entitled Across the Great Divide—Creative Human—Machine Improvisations. This event will feature workshops, lectures, performances and demonstrations by many of the leading artist/theorists working in the field of human— machine artistic interactions, including George Lewis, Pauline Oliveros, Evan Parker. Residents will have the unique opportunity to participate in this event, and interact with these, and other, participating artists.

Accordingly, the theme of the residency this year is Machine-Human Improvisational Interactions, and applicants to the residency are requested to submit with their application a project description that speaks to this theme, and evidence of prior work undertaken in this area. We construe the theme broadly, and it raises a number of questions that residents may want to pursue How do machine-human improvisations reveal features of what improvisation itself is, or could be? What do such interactions tell us about what it is to be human, or to be a machine? How might we remain humanists as artists yet embrace new technologies and their potentials? Can machines help us overcome artistic limitations, or do they create new ones? Are new modes of improvisation suggested by software and hardware systems? Have the use of new technologies in art changed the notion of what a body is, or what a machine is? How can we integrate new technologies into art that focuses on nature and the environment? Is a new age of improvisations powered by machines potentially freeing, or stultifying–should we be excited by the possibilities, or worried by what might follow?

We invite applications from artists working across the spectrum of new media arts (musicians, dancers-performers, video artists, photographers, e.t.c.) to participate in the residency. We will select up to 6 participants from the applications received. We are excited by the fact that innovative artist Miya Masaoka will be in attendance for the end of the residency to both work with the residents, and participate in the collective work. It is possible that other guest artists may “drop in” during the course of the residency.

Medea Electronique, being an eclectic art collective, is interested in people from diverse cultural and artistic backgrounds. Past residents have come from a variety of artistic backgrounds, and from numerous countries. While assorted nationalities and ethnicities have been represented, the common language of the residency is English (although fluency is not necessary, an ability to interact with other artists in English is necessary).

The residency provides:

A.In terms of hospitality

1) transportation from Athens to the residency and back.
2) housing and food supplies in Sparta
3) Internet connection while in Sparta residency
4) housing in Athens during the presentations

While there are few expenses the residents need to consider while at the residency, it is worth having some funds for trips to local cafes and the like.

Rooms, Bathrooms in Sparta are shared
Cooking and cleaning the house during our stay is undertaken collectively

B. In terms of equipment

1) A Mac Pro with Logic and Final Cut, assorted plugins
2) A 32-channel digital mixing desk, high-end monitoring (8 Channel Diffusion Set UP)
3) A range of studio microphones and sound processors
4) 2 digital recorders (Olympus LS11, Tascam HD2)

Notes:
• You ought to bring your own equipment/instrument and computers

We do not provide…
Unfortunately no artist fee is to be given for the presentations/performances. Residents are also responsible for their own transportation to and from Athens.

1) A participation form (Download from www.medeaelectronique.com)
2) A personal statement saying why you want to participate. This statement should speak to this year’s theme.
3) A small sample of your individual work (site, demo, pictures etc)
4) First draft ideas for projects related to this year’s theme
5) Your C.V.

Please submit all inquiries preferable online at

Christie Digital Systems Canada and CAFKA – Contemporary Art Forum Kitchener and Area have created an Artist in Residence programme. Christie Digital Systems Canada (www.christiedigital.com) is a global visual technologies company that produces products for business, entertainment, and industry. With expertise in film projection since 1929 and professional projection systems since 1979, Christie has established a reputation as the world’s single source manufacturer of a variety of display technologies and solutions for cinema, large audience environments, control rooms, business presentations, training facilities, 3D and virtual reality, simulation, education, media and government. As a market leader, Christie has installed over 100,000 projection solutions worldwide. Christie’s broad range of technologies include DLP Cinema™ projectors, LCD and DLP™ projectors, rear screen projection modules, video walls, and cutting edge projection technologies for 3D, virtual reality and simulation. In 2009, Christie launched the MicroTiles digital display system based on DLP technology with PhlatLight LED illumination. MicroTiles are modular 12h x 16w x 10d-inch rear projection units which can be stacked to form any shape or size.

The CHRISTIE/CAFKA Artist in Residence programme has the following goals:
a) the advancement of research and practice into the creative use of digital media technologies;
b) the use of visualisation and interactive technologies in the visual arts; and
c) the creation of digital media with intelligent projections that may include 3D animations.

Artists selected to participate in the programme will be exposed to a body of technical knowledge enabling them to explore forms, methods of display, and concepts not possible in their own studios as well as new ways of thinking and working in a unique collaborative environment. Christie will provide funding, facilities and technical mentoring to make its visualisation technologies accessible to resident artists.

1. DURATION OF PROGRAMME AND RESIDENCY

The Artist in Residence programme will have a term of two years. It will operate on an annual basis, hosting one artist position for a full year, or the equivalent in short term residencies. Each resident artist will have the opportunity to work from two to twelve months, depending on the size of the project, creating a work of art using Christie’s projection systems.

2. FACILITIES AND ARTIST BENEFITS

Each artist will be provided with studio space at Christie’s facilities at the Communitech HUB in downtown Kitchener, Ontario. The space is accessible to the resident artist 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. In addition, each resident artist will have access to the following:

a) technical assistance from Christie in developing artwork for use on Christie’s projection systems;
b) reimbursement of housing expenses for rent of up to $1,000 per month (the artist may bring family members but the artist will be required to cover any additional costs);
c) a stipend of $1,200 per month to cover food and personal expenses of the artist;
d) reimbursement of travel costs of up to $1,000 for the artist to travel from the artist’s residence to Kitchener, Ontario (the artist may bring family members but the artist will be required to cover any additional costs);
e) a workstation/studio at Christie’s facility at 809 Wellington Street North, Kitchener, Ontario
f) access to software
g) use of a bicycle supplied by Cycle CAFKA;

An important consideration in the selection of artists will be the extent that an applicant will take advantage of the resources and technical support provided by Christie. Artists will be selected for a residency based on:
a) the quality of past work;
b) the potential impact of the residency on the artist and their work;
c) the ability of the artist to master new technologies; and
d) a demonstrated commitment to working at Christie’s Kitchener facilities with their team and resources.

3. EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING / OUTREACH

The Christie/CAFKA residency is intended to benefit the cultural life of the City of Kitchener and the Region of Waterloo. As part of the Artist in Residence programme, resident artists will be expected to undertake a selection of the following, to be agreed upon between CAFKA and the artist:
a) public lecture;
b) public workshop;
c) video interviews to be broadcast on CAFKA TV and posted on the CAFKA web site;
d) blog or vlog, to be posted to the CAFKA website; and
e) public exhibition of completed artwork.

4. APPLICATION PROCESS

Applications to the Artist in Residence Programme must include:
a) a cover page including: name, address, city, postal/zip code, country, telephone, email, website, and a maximum one page project proposal;
b) a concise portfolio of previous work;
c) two letters of reference;
d) a curriculum vitae; and
e) an artist statement.

Applications will be administered and reviewed by CAFKA’s programming committee with support from staff from Christie who will be called on to assess the project’s technical feasibility.

ALL APPLICATIONS SHOULD BE DELIVERED TO:

CAFKA – Contemporary Art Forum Kitchener and Area
141 Whitney Place, Studio #7
Kitchener, Ontario, Canada N2G 2X8

Receipt of applications will be acknowledged by email.

Applications will be accepted on an on-going basis.

There are no deadlines for this residency program; artists may apply at any time on our website: outpostedit.org.

The Cuts & Burns Residency Program assists artists by eliminating the financial burden of high cost video post-production and custom programming, and provides them with professional video editors, sound engineers, and programmers who are passionate about contemporary art. Current commercial rates for an editing suite with an editor can cost over $1,000 per day. However, the Residency Program consists of 40 hours of free access to our studio with an editor. In addition to editing, we offer color correction, programming, DVD authoring, advanced graphics, sound mixes, multi-channel editing, and transfers between a variety of video formats.

Starting this past year we have also began assisting artists interested in building custom hardware and software. Artists who are working on interactive installations, experimenting with video projections, etc. are also encouraged to apply. We also offer lodging to residents if needed. Through Cuts and Burns, we have provided over a hundred residencies.

Deadline: Sunday 30th, December, 2012
